Mary-Louise Parker was born on August 2, 1964, in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Her father, a military officer, later became a judge. Parker studied theater at the North Carolina School of the Arts. She subsequently landed a small role in the soap opera "Ryan's Hope."

Breakthrough on Broadway and Film

In 1990, Parker made her Broadway debut in Craig Lucas's "Prelude to a Kiss." She won a Clarence Derwent Award for her performance and was nominated for a Tony Award. The same year, she made her film debut in "Longtime Companion" to critical acclaim.
