Pat Mastelotto: A Progressive Rock Legend
Early Life and CareerBorn on September 10, 1955, in Chicago, California, Pat Mastelotto began drumming at the tender age of 10. By 16, he was already performing in popular local bands. Throughout the 1970s, he gained experience as a studio and session drummer, collaborating with a vast array of artists, including Mr. Mister, Scandal, Al Jarreau, the Pointer Sisters, Patti LaBelle, Kenny Loggins, XTC, Hall & Oates, Cock Robin, The Rembrandts, and David Sylvian.
Mr. Mister and Collaborations
In 1983, Mastelotto co-founded the band Mr. Mister. Their debut album, "Welcome to the Real World," garnered critical acclaim, with "Broken Wings" and "Kyrie" becoming instant hits. The band released four albums before disbanding, with one remaining unreleased.
Throughout his time with Mr. Mister, Mastelotto continued to collaborate with other musicians and bands, such as XTC, The Sugarcubes, Hall & Oates, Cock Robin, The Rembrandts, Jude Cole, Eddie Money, Tina Arena, Matthew Sweet, Julia Fordham, Robyn Hitchcock, and David Sylvian.
King Crimson and Beyond
In 1994, Mastelotto joined the legendary progressive rock band King Crimson. He has remained an integral member ever since, contributing to their studio albums and live performances.
Beyond King Crimson, Mastelotto has pursued solo projects and collaborations. Together with King Crimson bandmate Trey Gunn, he formed the experimental duo KTU. He has also worked with Austinites Storyville, Abra Moore, ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, and Pamelia Kurstin.
Recent Projects
In recent years, Mastelotto has embarked on a European tour with The Flower Kings, formed the King Crimson Project with Gavin Harrison, and collaborated with Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, and Eddie Jobson. He has also worked on a project with Levin, Bozzio, and Allan Holdsworth.
