Early Life and Education

Patrick Friedman, born into a renowned family of economists, is the grandson of Nobel laureate Milton Friedman and the son of David Friedman, a prominent free-market theorist.

Activism and Political Philosophy

An activist and political economist, Friedman advocates for accelerated progress towards individual freedom through the establishment of new countries that can experiment with diverse social structures. He proposes seasteading, the construction and habitation of autonomous communities on floating platforms in international waters, as a practical approach. Friedman believes that "the point is not to create one governance system or type of system, but to develop a method for creating new jurisdictions that's ready-to-use now, so that many groups can try out their own versions and we can all learn."

Seasteading Institute

Friedman serves as executive director of the Seasteading Institute, founded in 2008 with a $500,000 investment from PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel. The institute's mission is to "establish permanent, autonomous communities in the ocean to allow for the experimentation and implementation of diverse societal, political, and legal systems." Initially a part-time venture while working as an engineer at Google, Friedman left Google in 2008 to dedicate his full attention to seasteading.

Personal Life

Friedman is divorced and has two children. He is an active member of Humanity+, a transhumanist organization.
