Early Life and Education

Arkadi Ghukasyan, a prominent figure in the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR), embarked on his educational journey in 1960 by completing his studies at the pedagogical college in Shusha. His academic pursuits continued at the Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute named after Lenin, where he graduated with a degree in physics and mathematics in 1969.

Teaching and Military Service

Before pursuing higher education, Ghukasyan worked as a teacher in the schools of the Martuni region from 1960 to 1961. He then served in the Soviet Army from 1961 to 1964, fulfilling his military obligations.

Academic Career

Upon returning from military service, Ghukasyan dedicated himself to teaching mathematics. He held positions in secondary schools in Stepanakert from 1969 to 1981, while also teaching at the Stepanakert Pedagogical Institute. His academic contributions continued when he joined the department of mathematics at the Artsakh State Pedagogical University, where he progressed through the ranks of assistant, senior lecturer, and associate professor from 1981 to 1990 and again from 1995 to 1999.

Political Engagement

Ghukasyan's political involvement began with his election to the Supreme Council of Armenia as a deputy from 1990 to 1995. He served as a member of the Standing Commission on Education and Science during this period. In 1992, he became a deputy of the Supreme Council of the NKR and held the position of Chairman of the Standing Commission on Education, Science, Culture, and Information until 1995.

Ministry of Education and Science

From 1999 to 2004, Ghukasyan played a pivotal role as Minister of Education and Science of the NKR, shaping the educational system of the republic. His dedication to education continued when he was appointed as the Rector of the Artsakh State University in 2004, a position he has held to this day.

Recognition and Honors

Ghukasyan's contributions have been widely recognized. In 2000, he was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of Sciences by the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (RAEN) and became an academician of the RAEN.
