Patriarch of Alexandria

In 539, Patriarch Zoilus ascended to the Patriarchate of Alexandria, serving until 551. Prior to his elevation, he resided as a monk in Palestine and held unwavering support for the decisions of the Council of Chalcedon.

Ordination and Deposition

Zoilus's ordination was an extraordinary event, owing to the collaboration of prominent church leaders. Patriarch Ephraim of Antioch, Patriarch Peter of Jerusalem, Hypatius I of Ephesus, and Pelagius, acting as a representative of Pope Vigilius, jointly consecrated him. This act marked the deposition of his predecessor, Patriarch Paul the Taveniote. Scholars offer varying dates for Zoilus's consecration, but 539 is widely accepted as the most probable.

Imperial Disapproval

Zoilus's tenure was characterized by his staunch opposition to Emperor Justinian I's imperial policy, which sought to condemn the "Three Chapters." Due to his unwavering resistance, the emperor orchestrated his deposition and removal from the Patriarchate.
