Early Life and Career Beginnings

Patrick Knowles was born on November 11, 1911, in Horsforth, Yorkshire, England. Despite being destined to follow his family into their bookbinding business, he harbored a passion for acting that led him to run away on two occasions. After gaining experience in provincial theater, he made his film debut in Zoltan Korda's "Men of Tomorrow" in 1932.

Rise to Fame in British Cinema

Knowles' tall and handsome appearance landed him leading roles in romantic films. He quickly gained popularity after appearing in 14 British films, including "The Girl in the Crowd" (1935) and "Crown v. Stevens" (1936). The latter became a bridge to Hollywood.

Hollywood Stardom and Wartime Service

In 1936, Knowles made his American debut in "Give Me Your Heart," followed by "Charge of the Light Brigade," where he reunited with Errol Flynn. Despite their close friendship, Knowles later refuted accusations that Flynn sympathized with fascism during the war. Knowles himself served as a flight instructor in the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Expanding Horizons

As his contract with Warner Bros. expired in 1939, Knowles became an independent actor. This allowed him to expand his range beyond romantic leads, but also led to more supporting roles. He ventured into horror films, appearing in "The Wolf Man" (1941) and "Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman" (1943). He also starred in comedies such as "Who Done It?" and "Hit the Ice" with Abbott and Costello.

Knowles began acting for television in 1951 and gradually shifted his focus to television series in the late 1950s. He appeared in numerous shows, including "Maverick," "Marcus Welby, M.D.," and "Gunsmoke."

Knowles remained married to Enid Percival from 1935 until his death in 1995. They had two children. For his contributions to the film industry, he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Patrick Knowles passed away on December 23, 1995, at the age of 84 due to a cerebral hemorrhage.
