Biography of Patrick Gallois

Patrick Gallois, a French flutist and conductor, was born in 1956 in Linselles, near Lille, in the north of France. At the age of 17, he began studying with one of the greatest flutists in history, Jean-Pierre Rampal, at the Paris Conservatory. By the time he was 21, Gallois had already become the principal flutist of the National Orchestra of France under the direction of American conductor Lorin Maazel.

Flutist and Solo Career

In 1984, Gallois left his orchestral career to focus on his solo career. He performed and recorded with several renowned conductors, including Neville Marriner, Antal Dorati, Leif Segerstam, and many others. He was frequently invited to perform with leading orchestras throughout Europe and Asia, as well as at international festivals such as the BBC Proms in London, the Pollenca Festival, and the City of London Festival.

Collaborations and Conducting Career

Gallois collaborated with various chamber ensembles, such as Yuri Bashmet, Peter Schreier, and Jorg Demus. He also worked with prominent orchestras including the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Lausanne, the Oregon Symphony Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Belgium, and the Helsinki Philharmonic. His extensive discography includes recordings with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre d'Auvergne, Sinfonia Varsovia, and the Cologne Chamber Orchestra, among others.

Gallois regularly toured in Germany, Japan, and Israel and conducted masterclasses at prestigious institutions such as the Academia Chigiana in Sienna and the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada. In 12 years since the creation of his Parisian orchestra, 'l'Academie de Paris,' Gallois proved his talent as a conductor. He conducted orchestras in Tokyo, California, Finland, Sweden, Italy, Israel, Romania, Bulgaria, and France.

In 2003, Gallois was appointed the musical director of the Sinfonia Finlandia Jyvaskyla. Composers Karen Tanaka and Kelly-Mary Murphy dedicated flute and cello concertos to Gallois and cellist Shauna Rolston. Jan Sandström also dedicated compositions to the flutist.

Throughout his career, Gallois has released over 75 recordings showcasing his exceptional talent as a flutist and conductor.
