Early Life and Education
Patrick Grant, a prominent British fashion designer, was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He attended the Edinburgh Academy, where he laid the foundation for his future career. Grant went on to study at the University of Leeds before completing an MBA at Oxford University.
Transition from Engineering to Fashion Design
Initially, Grant pursued engineering, but his passion for fashion led him to change his path. According to Grant, there were unexpected parallels between engineering and design, as both professions required an understanding of complex systems composed of simple components. His MBA thesis, which focused on the intersection of fashion design and marketing, analyzed the operations of the iconic brand Burberry.
Acquisition of Norton & Sons
In 2005, Grant discovered that the once-renowned label Norton & Sons was up for sale at a remarkably low price. Determined to acquire the company, he sold most of his possessions, took out loans, and secured external investments. In December 2005, he successfully purchased the struggling label.
Reviving the Norton & Sons Label
Grant's astute observations revealed that Norton & Sons was in poor financial shape despite its talented workforce. Under his leadership, the company underwent a transformation, returning it to its former glory while incorporating modern approaches. Grant discontinued the unprofitable firearms and sporting goods lines, focusing solely on clothing. By 2011, the label had increased its customer base threefold, producing a substantial profit.
Expansion and Success
In 2009, Grant relaunched the dormant subsidiary E. Tautz & Sons, specializing in ready-to-wear clothing. This brand quickly became an integral part of his business, garnering particular success in Asia. For his work with E. Tautz & Sons, Grant was recognized as Menswear Designer of 2010. In 2013, he announced plans to revive another subsidiary, Hammond & Co., introducing affordable menswear exclusively at Debenhams.
Media Presence and Personal Life
Beyond his fashion design career, Grant has established a strong presence in the media. He regularly appears on radio and television programs, and maintains a popular blog for GQ.com. Since 2007, Grant has been in a relationship with fashion accessories designer Katie Hillier.
