Biography of Patrick Macnee
Early Life and CareerPatrick Macnee was born on February 6, 1922, in England. He grew up in a creative environment, with his great-grandfather being a renowned painter and his father training thoroughbred racehorses. At the age of 8, Macnee's parents divorced, and he moved to another city with his mother. They lived under the patronage of his wealthy aunt, Evelyn Spottsworth. Macnee attended Eton for a few years, but he was expelled due to his truancy.
In 1937, Macnee had his first encounter with the film industry when he landed a role as an extra in the movie "Pygmalion." In 1939, he enlisted in the Royal Navy and also underwent training at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art.
Theater and Television Career
Starting from the 1940s, Patrick Macnee began his theater career, gradually earning invitations to play leading roles in prestigious London theaters. He portrayed numerous iconic Shakespearean characters throughout his career. In 1942, Macnee had another opportunity to act in films, but his enlistment in the army in October halted his progress.
After serving in the military, Macnee returned to theater in 1946 and shortly after ventured into television. In 1947, he landed a small role in the film "Wuthering Heights," which brought him attention from British directors and made him more visible in the industry.
Move to Canada and Hollywood
In the 1950s, Macnee relocated to Canada, where he decided to start his career afresh since he had not achieved any significant success before. The move to the new country brought Macnee numerous roles in various TV series and telefilms. However, he desired something more, leading him to make the decision to move to the United States in 1955.
In 1957, Patrick Macnee began his Hollywood career with his first film, "Les Girls." However, like his experiences in Canada and England, he faced disappointment.
Return to England and Successful Career
In 1960, Patrick Macnee returned to his homeland. His first successful work was the TV series "Theatre Chair." Following this, he enjoyed a string of successful projects. Some of his notable films include "A Night to Remember," "Waxwork," "A View to a Kill," "Waxwork II: Lost in Time," and "The Howling." In total, Macnee appeared in approximately 119 films across various genres. His final role was in the 2003 film "Low Budget Time Machine." He passed away in California at the age of 93.
