Biography of Patrick Baboumian
Patrick Baboumian was born on July 1, 1979, in Abadan, Iran. At the age of seven, he immigrated to Hattenhof, Germany, with his grandmother and mother. By the age of nine, Patrick developed an interest in strength training, which led to his pursuit of bodybuilding in his youth.
In 1999, at the age of 20, Baboumian won the German Youth Bodybuilding Championship organized by the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB). In 2002, he became the absolute champion of the Hessian Championship.
Currently, Patrick holds the world record for log lift in the weight category up to 105 kg, with a record of 165 kg. He competed in the World Championship of the International Federation of Strongmen (FSA) in 2007, finishing in 14th place. Additionally, Baboumian set the German record for log lift among strongmen with a weight of 180 kg.
On May 21, 2011, Patrick lifted 190 kg in Turku, Finland, winning the local competition. In the same year, he earned the title of "Germany's Strongest Man" in the category up to 105 kg after winning the national strongman competition.
Continuing his path to success, Baboumian won the German Barrel Lifting Championship in 2012, lifting a weight of 115 kg. He also became the champion of the European Powerlifting Championships in Finland, setting a world record for holding weight on extended arms. Patrick managed to hold a 20 kg grip for 86 seconds.
By the end of 2012, Baboumian had exceeded a weight of 127 kg, no longer participating in competitions in the weight category up to 105 kg. In the same year, he failed to squat with a 300 kg barbell at the European Powerlifting Championships, but succeeded in bench pressing 200 kg and deadlifting 330 kg.
In 2012, Patrick also set a world record for lifting beer kegs, lifting a weight of 150.2 kg. He improved the world record for holding weight on extended arms for 10 seconds with a 20 kg grip. That eventful year concluded with Baboumian earning the title of "Vegan Athlete of the Year," a first in history.
In 2013, Baboumian was invited to the Champions League of the largest European sports exhibition FIBO to compete against elite strongmen. He proved himself at this level, becoming the best in holding weight with arms extended to the sides. In the same year, Patrick set a world record in a unique discipline called the "yoke walk" at the Toronto VegFest. The total weight of the yoke, consisting of a crossbar and two weighted stands, was 550 kg. After this spectacular event, Baboumian addressed the festival audience, saying: "What I have accomplished is a message to all those who think that you cannot become fit and strong without animal products. It has been two years since I became a vegan, and I continue to feel stronger every day. Do not listen to self-proclaimed nutrition gurus and supplement manufacturers who try to prove that you need meat, eggs, and dairy products to get enough protein. There are numerous plant-based protein sources, and your body will thank you when you stop stuffing it with dead food. Switch to veganism and feel the power!"
In 2014, Baboumian published a book on sports nutrition. He then began working on translating his work into English, temporarily suspending his performances. However, in 2015, Patrick made a comeback and appeared at the German National Strongman Competition. This time, Baboumian broke his own world record in the discipline of yoke walk.
Advocating for a vegetarian diet, Baboumian became the new face of PETA's campaign for animal protection in 2011.
