Paul Biedermann - A German Swimmer
Paul Biedermann is a German swimmer who has achieved great success in both long and short course swimming. He is a two-time world champion and a multiple-time European champion. Biedermann has also set four world records, twice in the 50-meter pool and twice in short course swimming.
Early Career
Biedermann's breakthrough came in 2008 when he won the 200-meter freestyle at the European Championships in the 50-meter pool with a time of 1:46.59. He also recorded impressive times of 3:47.69 in the 400-meter freestyle and 1:46.37 (a national record) in the 100-meter freestyle, which earned him a spot in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. At the Olympics, Biedermann finished fifth in the 200-meter freestyle final with a time of 1:46.00 and 17th in the 400-meter freestyle, narrowly missing out on a spot in the final.
World Championships
On July 26, 2009, at the World Championships in Rome, Biedermann won the 400-meter freestyle final with a time of 3:40.07. This time was over seven seconds faster than his previous personal best and one hundredth of a second faster than the previous world record set by Ian Thorpe in 2002. Two days later, on July 28, Biedermann won his second gold medal in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:42.00, defeating American swimmer Michael Phelps and breaking his world record. It is worth noting that Biedermann was wearing a polyurethane swimsuit during these races, which was later banned starting from January 1, 2010.
Awards and Recognition
In 2009, Biedermann was named the European Swimmer of the Year, becoming the first German to win this award since 1986. He was also recognized as the Best Athlete of the Year in Germany. Biedermann's achievements and contributions to German swimming have solidified his position as one of the country's most successful swimmers in recent history.
