Early Life and Naval Career
Early Years:Günter Braasack was born on July 1, 1944, and enlisted in the German Navy as a cadet on September 31, 1937. He was promoted to Ensign on April 1, 1939, and to Lieutenant on August 1, 1939.
Aviation and Submarine Service:
Braasack initially served in the aviation branch of the Navy. However, in March 1942, he was transferred to the submarine fleet. After completing a 6-month training course, he was assigned as a watch officer on the U-737 submarine.
Combat Duty
U-737:Braasack served on the U-737 as a watch officer, participating in eight combat patrols, including missions in the Arctic where he engaged in attacks on Allied convoys. From February 5 to November 24, 1943, he commanded the U-737, leading two combat patrols and spending a total of 64 days at sea.
Recognition and Post-War Service
Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross:On October 30, 1944, Braasack was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for his bravery in submarine combat.
Post-War Years:
In November 1944, Braasack was appointed training officer for the 25th Submarine Flotilla. After Germany's surrender in May 1945, he was captured by Allied forces and held as a prisoner of war. He was released in 1947.
In 1957, Braasack rejoined the West German Navy and commanded the destroyer Z-2. He also served as naval attaché in Washington, D.C. He retired in 1974 with the rank of Captain.
