Doug Collins is a legendary American former professional basketball player and coach. Throughout his illustrious career, he graced the courts of the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a player and later became a renowned head coach for several NBA teams.
Playing Career
Born and raised in Benton, Illinois, Collins showcased his exceptional basketball skills at Illinois State University. As a standout player, he led the Redbirds to two NCAA Tournament appearances and was named an All-American. In 1973, he was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers with the first overall pick.
Collins established himself as a skilled shooting guard, known for his deadly three-point shooting and tenacious defense. He spent nine seasons in the NBA, representing the 76ers, Atlanta Hawks, Detroit Pistons, and Chicago Bulls.
Olympic Glory
In 1972, Collins represented the United States in the summer Olympics held in Munich, Germany. The basketball tournament was marked by the legendary gold medal match between the US and the Soviet Union. With seconds remaining, Collins' crucial interception and successful free throws nearly snatched victory for Team USA. However, Alexander Belov's buzzer-beater secured the gold for the Soviet Union.
Coaching Career
Following his retirement from playing, Collins embarked on a successful coaching career. He led the Chicago Bulls, Detroit Pistons, Washington Wizards, and Philadelphia 76ers to various playoff appearances and coaching awards. Collins is known for his demanding and passionate approach, inspiring his teams to play with intensity and discipline.

Collins is happily married and has two children, Chris and Kelly. He resides in the picturesque Delaware Valley. His son, Chris, inherited his father's basketball genes and played professionally before becoming an assistant coach at Duke University. Kelly played basketball at Lehigh University and currently works as a teacher in Pennsylvania.
