Early Life and Youth Career
Born on November 22, 1986, in Aberdeen, Scotland, Paul Dixon began his footballing journey with Monifieth Athletic, a local youth club where he played from 1994 to 1999. His impressive performances caught the attention of Dundee scouts, who invited the 13-year-old defender to join their youth academy in 1999.
Professional Debut with Dundee
Dixon turned professional on May 31, 2005, signing his first contract with Dundee. He made his debut for the first team on July 31, 2005, in a Challenge Cup match against East Stirling. Six days later, he made his Scottish First Division debut against St. Mirren. Dixon scored his first goal for Dundee on January 21, 2006, against Brechin City. He signed a two-year contract extension with the club on February 3, 2006.
Consistent Performances at Dundee
Dixon established himself as a regular starter for Dundee during the 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons, making 72 appearances in total. In June 2007, Norwich City expressed interest in signing him, but Dundee rejected the approach. He turned down a move to Kilmarnock in January 2008, stating his desire to remain at Dens Park until the end of his contract.
Move to Dundee United
In June 2008, Dixon joined Dundee United on a three-year contract. He made his debut for the club on September 23, 2008, in a 2-0 League Cup victory over Airdrie United. Four days later, he played his first Scottish Premier League match against Heart of Midlothian. Dixon scored his first goal for United on January 3, 2009, with a stunning free-kick against Celtic. He was named Dundee United's Young Player of the Year for the 2008/09 season.
Contract Extension and International Debut
Dixon signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract with United on March 4, 2010. He made his Scotland Under-21 debut on August 21, 2007, against Czech Republic. He was called up to the Scotland B team in May 2009 but was not released by Dundee United due to fixture clashes. Dixon received his first call-up to the full Scotland squad in February 2010 for a friendly against Czech Republic, but he did not make his debut.
