Adolphe Giraud: French Historian and Politician
Born into an influential family in Romans-sur-Isère, Adolphe Giraud's father, Gérard Paul Giraud, served as the town's mayor from 1808 to 1813. Following in his father's footsteps, Adolphe held the office of mayor from 1830 to 1835 and was elected as a deputy from 1831 to 1846.
Political Career
After an electoral defeat on August 1, 1846, Giraud withdrew from political life and dedicated himself to researching the history of the Dauphiné region and his hometown. Recognized for his contributions, Giraud was awarded the Legion of Honor in May 1839 and became a member of the Archaeological Society.
Historical Legacy
Giraud's scholarly pursuits centered on documenting the past of his beloved Romans-sur-Isère. His meticulous research resulted in a substantial body of work that shed light on the town's rich tapestry of history.
Retirement and Death
In his later years, Giraud retired to Beaumont-Monte, where he spent the remainder of his days. He passed away there on September 30, 1883, leaving behind a lasting legacy as a distinguished historian and former mayor of Romans-sur-Isère.
