Early Life and Education
Paul Michael Glaser was born on March 25, 1943, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He attended Cambridge School of Weston and later enrolled at Tulane University in Louisiana, where he earned a Master's degree in English and Drama in 1966. At Tulane, Glaser's roommate was future film director Bruce Paltrow. He then pursued another Master's degree, this time in Acting, at Boston University in 1967.
Early Career and Breakout Role
After appearing in several Broadway productions, Glaser made his film debut in the 1971 adaptation of "Fiddler on the Roof." On television, he first played Dr. Peter Chernak in the series "Love is a Many Splendored Thing," followed by guest roles in shows like "The Rockford Files." Glaser's breakthrough came when he landed the role of Detective David Starsky in the popular television series "Starsky & Hutch" (1975-1979). He also directed several episodes of the show.
Post-"Starsky & Hutch" Career
After "Starsky & Hutch," Glaser continued to appear in television and film. He directed the 1987 film "The Running Man" starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and the 1992 film "The Cutting Edge." Glaser also directed the children's film "Kazaam" (1996) starring Shaquille O'Neal. In November 2007, he played Captain Hook in a pantomime production of "Peter Pan."
Personal Life and Family
Glaser was married twice. His first marriage was to Elizabeth Meyer in 1980. In August 1981, after giving birth to their first child, Ariel, Elizabeth contracted HIV during a blood transfusion. She remained unaware of the virus for four years until both Ariel and their second child, Jake (born October 1984), were diagnosed with HIV. Ariel died in August 1988, and Elizabeth passed away in 1994, shortly after establishing a foundation to aid people with AIDS.
In 1996, Glaser married Tracy Barone. The couple had a daughter, Zoe, in 1997. They divorced in June 2007.
