Biography of Juliet Mills

Juliet Marion Mills, born on November 21, 1941, is an English actress. She was born in London during World War II, but her parents, playwright Mary Hayley Bell and actor John Mills, relocated the family to the countryside shortly after her birth to avoid bombings. Juliet is the older sister of actress Hayley Mills and director Jonathan Mills. Growing up, she was surrounded by well-known personalities such as Rex Harrison, David Niven, and Marlon Brando, and her godmother was the star of "Gone with the Wind," Vivien Leigh, while her godfather was playwright Noel Coward.

Early Life and Career

Juliet received her training at the Elmhurst Ballet School in Camberley, Surrey. Initially, she did not consider pursuing a career in acting and even contemplated becoming a nun. However, after her younger sister Hayley achieved success as an actress in Disney films like "Pollyanna" and "Parent Trap," Juliet decided to join the family business. She made her first major role debut at the age of sixteen in the play "Five Finger Exercise" written by renowned playwright Peter Shaffer. The production ran in London before moving to Broadway. Despite her young age, Juliet was nominated for a Tony Award for "Best Actress in a Play" in 1960.

In addition to her stage work, Juliet also ventured into film, starring in western "The Rare Breed" alongside James Stewart. She considers her career peak during that time to be the 1972 film "Avanti!" directed by Billy Wilder and starring Jack Lemmon. However, Juliet gained significant recognition after her role in the American television series "Nanny and the Professor" in 1970. She portrayed a unique American version of Mary Poppins. This role also earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Although the show initially did well, it was later moved to a less favorable time slot and eventually canceled due to declining ratings.

In 1974, Juliet received an Emmy Award for "Outstanding Single Performance by a Supporting Actress in a Comedy or Drama Series" for her role in "QB VII." In 1980, she returned to the stage in the production of "The Elephant Man" alongside Maxwell Caulfield, whom she later married. Following her third marriage, Juliet shifted her focus to supporting her husband's endeavors and left the stage.

Throughout her career, Juliet continued to make appearances in various television shows and films. In 1999, she portrayed a role in the daytime soap opera "Passions," which earned her a nomination for a Daytime Emmy Award. In 2009, she joined the cast of the fourth season of the ITV series "Wild at Heart," taking over a role previously played by her sister Hayley.
