A Heart to Live On: The Story of Paul Heyman
The Longest-Living Heart Transplant Recipient in the UKPaul Heyman, a 49-year-old father of two from Plymouth, underwent a life-saving heart transplant in 1987. The same heart continues to beat in his chest today, making him the longest-living 'heart recipient' in the UK.
Defying the odds, Heyman has outlived the 10-year lifespan expectancy given to him by doctors. His pioneering surgeon, Sir Terence English, performed the UK's first successful heart transplant.
Heyman credits his longevity to his "laid-back attitude to life." He said, "Having this heart was the greatest gift anyone could ever receive. It's a miracle."
A Serendipitous Second Chance
Before the transplant, Sir Terence warned Heyman that without the surgery, he would not survive. "You'll be very fortunate to see Christmas," the surgeon said.
After the death of 73-year-old John McCafferty last year, who had lived with his transplanted heart for 33 years, Heyman became the UK's longest-surviving 'heart recipient.'
Celebrating the Gift of Life
This summer, Heyman will celebrate his 50th birthday. His remarkable journey began when he discovered at age 15 that his heart was four times larger than normal.
Forced to quit his job as an electrician due to his condition, Heyman said he "never expected to see my children grow up."
Inspiring a Family's Legacy
His daughter, Melissa, 25, inspired by the medical advancements that saved her father's life, became a doctor. His other daughter, Lucy, 21, pursued a career in corporate finance.
The Importance of Organ Donation
Heyman is an ardent advocate for organ donation. He said, "A third of patients die waiting for a transplant."
"Now with the technology that's available, they can keep you alive for so long. Machines are so good, it's just an existence."
The Heart of the Matter
Heart transplants replace a diseased heart with a healthy donor heart. In the UK, around 200 heart transplants are performed each year.
Patients are placed on waiting lists, and it can take days, months, or even years to find a suitable match. Sadly, a fifth of patients die while waiting, while half receive a transplant within three years.
