French Right-Wing Politician

Political Career

Philippe de Villiers is a prominent French right-wing politician. He served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for France from 1999 to 2009, where he became known for his vocal opposition to the introduction of the euro within the European Union.

Eurosceptic Views

Villiers has been a consistent eurosceptic, criticizing the European project as undemocratic and undermining French sovereignty. His opposition to the euro was particularly strong, arguing that it would lead to economic stagnation and loss of national control.

European Parliament Controversy

In December 2007, Villiers caused controversy during the signing of the European Charter of Fundamental Rights. He protested by shouting "Vive la France!" and "Vive la République!", which were deemed to be unparliamentary language. As a result, he was fined €1,435 by the European Parliament.

Observer in Russian Elections

Villiers also served as an observer for the CIS-EMO (International Election Observation Mission) during presidential elections in Russia. His presence was seen as a sign of support for Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has been criticized for his authoritarian rule.

Political Affiliations

Prior to his election to the European Parliament, Villiers was the editor-in-chief of RPR ("Rassemblement pour la République"), the journal of the Gaullist party. This appointment reflects his deep connection to the French right and his commitment to conservative values.
