Biography of Paul Pietsch
German racing driver and publisher, Paul Pietsch was born in 1911 in the Swabian city of Freiburg. He was born into a wealthy brewer's family. From a young age, he developed an interest in motorsports, attending races and eventually getting behind the wheel of a racing car himself, a Bugatti Type 35B.
Racing Career
After making his debut in his own Bugatti, Pietsch later joined the factory team of Auto Union. In 1935, he achieved a third-place finish in the Italian Grand Prix. He then had a stint racing for the Maserati team, earning another podium finish with a third place in the pre-war 1939 German Grand Prix.
Following World War II, Pietsch competed in three seasons of Formula 1 from 1950 to 1953. However, he did not have much success and was unable to score any championship points, leading him to retire from racing.
Publishing Career
During his racing career, Pietsch also found success as a publisher. He founded the companies Motor Presse Stuttgart and Paul Pietsch Verlage, which are now internationally renowned. Notably, Pietsch was the founder of the esteemed German automotive magazine, Auto Motor und Sport.
Paul Pietsch's contributions to both motorsports and publishing have solidified his legacy in Germany and internationally. He holds the distinction of being the first Formula 1 driver to reach the age of 100.
