In the 1970s, Reubens became a member of the Los Angeles comedy troupe 'The Groundlings' and started his career as a stage actor in the genre of improvisational comedy.

The Creation of Pee-wee Herman

In 1982, Reubens launched a show built around a character he had been working on for several years - Pee-wee Herman. 'The Pee-wee Herman Show' ran for five months on stage to sold-out audiences, and it caught the attention of the television network HBO, which created a special TV show dedicated to the character. Pee-wee Herman quickly became a cult figure, and Paul Reubens became closely associated with his creation. In fact, Reubens appeared in public as Pee-wee in all his public appearances.
