Early Life and Film Debut

Mickey Rooneywas born Joseph Yule Jr. on September 23, 1920. He made his stage debut as a child and his film debut at the age of six in the movie "Not to Be Trusted."

Short Films and Screen Success

In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Rooney starred in a series of short comedy films. His breakthrough role came in William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (1935), which led to his casting as Andy Hardy in the 1937 film "A Family Affair."

The Andy Hardy Series

The character of Andy Hardy, an ordinary American teenager from a small town, resonated with audiences. Rooney starred in 15 Andy Hardy films, which earned him a special Academy Award (Juvenile) in 1938.

Post-War Career

After World War II, Rooney experienced financial difficulties but continued to act in films and television. He excelled as a character actor in films such as "The Bold and the Brave" (1956), "Baby Face Nelson" (1957), and "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" (1963).

Broadway Debut and Accolades

In 1979, Rooney made a triumphant return to Broadway. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for his supporting role in "The Black Stallion" and received an honorary Academy Award and an Emmy Award for his performance in the television film "Bill" (1981).

Later Career

Rooney continued to work into his later years, appearing in films such as "Slaughterhouse-Five" (1972), "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961), and "Baby: Pig in the City" (1998). He also released his autobiography, "Life Is Too Short," in 1991.
