Jones is widely recognized as one of the most successful American brokers, having amassed a tremendous fortune through his business acumen and stroke of luck.
Early Life and Education
Jones obtained his higher education at the University of Memphis and later earned a degree in economics from the University of Virginia. In 1976, he achieved notable success as a welterweight boxer. He embarked on his business career in the same year, initially working as a clerk in brokerage trading and gradually rising to the position of a broker at E.F. Hutton. In 1980, he decided to solely focus on trading for himself and founded Tudor Investment Corporation.
Entrepreneurial Journey
In an attempt to enhance his skills, Jones enrolled at Harvard Business School. However, he soon realized that the knowledge imparted there did not align with his aspirations. Consequently, he abandoned his pursuit of further education and sought guidance from his cousin, William Dunavant. Dunavant's family enterprises were among the largest cotton producers and sellers.
Dunavant arranged for Jones to meet Eli Tullis, a prominent broker in New Orleans, who offered him a promising job opportunity. Jones began trading cotton futures at the New York Cotton Exchange. In 1980, he founded Tudor Investment Corporation, which has since become a leading figure in the stock market.
