Early Life and Family Connections
Born on June 10, 1868, in Hamburg, Germany, Paul Warburg was a descendant of a prominent Jewish banking family. His great-grandfather, Moses Marcus Warburg, established the renowned banking house M.M. Warburg & Co. in 1798. His brothers included notable figures such as Felix, Max, and Fritz Warburg, and his in-laws were prominent Jewish leaders.
Immigration to the United States
In 1902, Paul Warburg immigrated to the United States and joined Kuhn, Loeb & Co., a major investment bank. He became a naturalized American citizen in 1911. In 1910, he was elected a director of Wells Fargo & Co.
Establishment of the Federal Reserve
Warburg played a pivotal role in the creation of the Federal Reserve System. In 1910, he attended a secret meeting of leading bankers on Jekyll Island, Georgia, where the concept of the Federal Reserve was developed. Warburg's ideas formed the foundation of the Federal Reserve Act, which was passed by Congress in 1912.
Service on the Federal Reserve Board
Subsequently, Warburg served on the Federal Reserve Board, helping to shape the policies of the nation's central bank. He is credited with proposing the idea of an open market system for Treasury operations.
Legacy and Controversy
Warburg's financial theories and his involvement in the establishment of the Federal Reserve have led to both admiration and controversy. He is often quoted as saying, "The world's financial system will be centralized in the hands of the few, and that the few will rule the world. That is the secret of our money system."
Personal Life and Death
Warburg married Nina Loeb in 1895, and they had a son and a daughter. He died from hypostatic pneumonia on January 24, 1932, at the age of 63. He was buried in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in New York.
