Paulo Autuori: A Journey Through Football
Early Life and EducationPaulo Autuori was born in Brazil to Italian ancestors. After completing school, he pursued higher education in sports. He earned degrees in Physical Education from the Castelo-Branco University in Rio, Sports Management from the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, and completed coaching courses at the State University of Rio de Janeiro.
Early Coaching Career (1974-1985)
Autuori embarked on his coaching journey in 1974, working with modest teams in Rio and São Paulo to gain experience. In 1986, he took charge of Botafogo, one of Rio's great clubs. Despite not winning any titles during his first stint, Autuori gained valuable experience.
Journey to Portugal (1990-1994)
Seeking new opportunities, Autuori ventured to Portugal, where he honed his coaching skills with smaller but competitive teams such as Vitória Guimarães, Nacional, and Marítimo. Upon returning to Brazil, he exclusively led some of the country's top clubs, including those in the Club Thirteen.
First Major Success and Benfica (1995-1996)
In 1995, Autuori achieved his first significant triumph. He guided Botafogo to its first-ever Brazilian Championship title. The team, spearheaded by Goncalves, Donizete, and fan favorite Tulio Maravilha, enjoyed a remarkable season. Following this success, Autuori moved to Benfica, a legendary European club that had been overshadowed by Porto. He led the "Eagles" to a third-place finish in the Portuguese league before returning to Brazil.
Triumphs in Minas Gerais and Brazil (1997-2000)
1997 proved to be a monumental year for Autuori. He led Cruzeiro to victory in the Minas Gerais State League and the Copa Libertadores, their second continental championship. However, he faced stagnation from 1998 to 2000, coaching several top Brazilian clubs like Flamengo, Internacional, Santos, and Botafogo, but not lasting more than a year each.
"Peruvian Period" (2001-2005)
From 2001 to 2005, Autuori experienced a successful period in Peru. He won the Peruvian Championship twice, with Alianza Lima (2001) and Sporting Cristal (2002). His achievements prompted the Peruvian Football Federation to appoint him as the national team manager. At the 2004 Copa America, the hosts reached the quarterfinals, narrowly losing to Argentina. Autuori's work was highly regarded.
Glory with São Paulo (2005)
In April 2005, Autuori returned to Brazil to coach São Paulo. He led them to an exceptional season in the 2005 Copa Libertadores, culminating in a victory over Atlético Paranaense in the first all-Brazilian final. The "Tricolor Paulista" also won the Club World Cup, defeating Liverpool 1-0. Autuori left the club in December 2005.
International Experience (2006-2012)
After São Paulo, Autuori coached in Japan (Kashima Antlers) and Qatar (Al-Rayyan) while returning to Brazil with brief stints at Cruzeiro and Grêmio.
Return to Brazil (2013-2017)
In 2013, Autuori took charge of Vasco da Gama and then returned to São Paulo in 2016. He later coached Atlético Paranaense, winning the Paraná State Championship in 2016. In 2017, he resigned after the Brazilian Championship season.
