Biography of Pat Summitt
Early Life and Basketball CareerPatricia Sue Head, known as Pat Summitt, was an American coach and a specialist in women's basketball. Born in Clarksville, Tennessee, she grew up with three brothers and one younger sister. In her hometown, she was unable to play basketball as the school did not have a girls' team. However, moving to the nearby town of Henrietta helped change the situation. Pat continued playing basketball in college at the University of Tennessee, where she achieved impressive national results. Despite not being able to receive a sports scholarship as they were not offered to women at that time, her brothers received athletic scholarships to college.
Coaching Career at the University of Tennessee
Pat Summitt began her coaching career at the University of Tennessee as the head coach of the Lady Vols in the 1974-1975 season. In the early years, women's basketball was not recognized by the NCAA and was not popular. Summitt received a monthly salary of $250, which included washing the team's uniforms. Despite the challenges, her team achieved their first victory on January 10, 1975.
Successes and Championships
Throughout her coaching career, Pat Summitt accomplished remarkable achievements. She became the winningest coach in the history of NCAA basketball, surpassing any men's or women's team in any division. Under her leadership, the Lady Vols won numerous championships and set records. In the 1986-1987 season, they won their first national championship. Summitt also reached the milestone of 300 wins that season. Over the years, the Lady Vols continued their success, reaching the NCAA Final Four multiple times and winning several SEC championships.
Later Years and Retirement
In August 2011, Pat Summitt announced that she had been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Despite the health challenges, she completed the season with the assistance of her coaching staff. She officially retired on April 18, 2012, and her longtime assistant, Holly Warlick, succeeded her as the head coach. By the end of her career, Summitt had achieved 1,098 wins in 1,306 games in both AIAW and NCAA Division I, becoming the first coach in NCAA history and one of only four coaches at the university level to reach 1,000 wins.
