Biography of Pavel Andreevsky
Pavel Arkadyevich Andreevsky (June 29, 1849 - March 20, 1890) was a lawyer and journalist. He was born on June 29, 1849 in Kharkov and passed away on March 20, 1890 in Kiev.
Education and Early Career
After completing his studies at the Ekaterinoslav Gymnasium in 1866, Andreevsky enrolled in the Law Faculty at Kharkov University. In 1871, he obtained a degree in law and was appointed as a secretary to the prosecutor of the Samara District Court. In 1873, he became a judicial investigator in Samara. However, in 1875, Andreevsky left his position and moved to Kiev.
Legal and Literary Career
In 1877, Andreevsky was admitted as a sworn advocate of the Moscow Court Chamber, and in 1880, he became a sworn advocate of the Kiev District. In addition to his legal work, he also pursued a career in journalism. Starting from November 1 of the same year, he began publishing the newspaper "Zarya" in Kiev, which ceased publication at the end of 1886. Andreevsky was known for his theater reviews, which were published in various newspapers such as "Samarsky Sprovochny Listok," "Kievsky Listok," "Kievlyanin," "Zarya," and "Kievsky Slovo." He also wrote witty Sunday feuilletons under the pseudonym "Igla," which were well-received by local readers. Some of these feuilletons were later compiled into separate publications, such as the 1886 diary "Dnevnik prazdnogo cheloveka" and the 1888 humor collection "Igla."
Literary Works
Andreevsky wrote four plays, three of which were performed. These include the drama "Bolezn veka" (Disease of the Century) in five acts, the comedy "Prizraki" (Ghosts) in four acts, and the farce "Muzhestvennaya zhenshchina" (Brave Woman). "Bolezn veka" was particularly notable as it was performed in 1878 at the Alexandrinsky Theater in St. Petersburg for the benefit of actress Struyskaya. Unfortunately, Andreevsky's fourth play, "Prestupniki na svobode" (Criminals at Large), was never published. Additionally, Andreevsky wrote humorous poems, parodies, and translations, but these remained unpublished during his lifetime.
Legal Orator and Personality
As a legal orator, Andreevsky specialized in criminal law and was known for his intelligence, resourcefulness, wit, and ability to grasp the important aspects of a case. His skills as a lawyer were highly regarded. Unfortunately, Andreevsky's life was cut short, and he passed away at the age of 40. His contributions to literature and his career as a lawyer left a lasting impact.
