Hero of the Great Patriotic War

Birth and Early Life

Aydin Gukazovich Arutyunyan was born on July 1, 1918, in the village of Toros, Armenia, to a peasant family. As an Armenian, he graduated from pedagogical college in 1939 with honors and worked as a school administrator in the village of Zaryshat.

Military Service

Arutyunyan joined the Soviet Army in 1939 and fought in the Great Patriotic War from June 1941. He participated in battles for the Caucasus, the liberation of Kuban and Ukraine. His actions during the Crimean operation in May 1944 were particularly distinguished.

Heroic Actions

As an assistant platoon commander in the 526th Rifle Regiment, Arutyunyan led an assault on Mount Gornaya. He destroyed a German bunker with grenades and eliminated numerous enemy soldiers. Taking command of two platoons after their leaders were killed, he successfully repelled a counterattack and wiped out enemy reinforcements.

Distinguished Service

Arutyunyan's unit destroyed 70 enemy soldiers and captured 30 prisoners during the battle. For his exemplary bravery and leadership, he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on March 24, 1945.

Post-War Life

After the war, Arutyunyan retired from the army and settled in Yerevan. He worked in the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Armenian SSR and later as head of a department in the city council. He retired with the rank of major in 1961.

Legacy

Arutyunyan passed away on June 15, 1993, and was buried in Yerevan's Erablur Cemetery. He was survived by his wife, three children, and five grandchildren. His heroic deeds during the Great Patriotic War remain an inspiring testament to courage and sacrifice.
