Yakov Ivanovich Shlikov
Yakov Ivanovich Shlikov was a renowned Ukrainian sculptor born in Donetsk on June 16, 1908. He left an indelible mark on the artistic landscape of the region, creating numerous sculptures and monuments that have become iconic landmarks.
Artistic Achievements
Shlikov's contributions to Donetsk's artistic heritage are multifaceted. Notably, he sculpted the monument to Bohdan Khmelnytsky, a renowned Ukrainian leader, which graces the city center. His collaborative works with Naum Abramovich Ginzburg, such as the two sculptures representing Science and Labor outside the Donetsk National University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, further demonstrate his creativity and skill.
Other Notable Works
Beyond Donetsk, Shlikov's artistry extended to other cities. He created the monument to the pioneers of the "Donbass" coal combine in Torez, the memorial to fallen soldiers in Starobeshevo, and two monuments to Zaporozhian Cossacks in Selidovo. Additionally, he sculpted a monument to the Cossack leader Moрозенко on Saur-Mogila and numerous sculptures for the Central Department Store in Kyiv.
Later Years and Legacy
Shlikov passed away in 2006, leaving behind a rich artistic legacy. His sculptures continue to inspire and engage viewers, showcasing the power and beauty of human expression through his craft. Shlikov's works have earned him a well-deserved place in the Unified Artistic Rating, a testament to his exceptional talent.
Tragic Loss
Sadly, two of Shlikov's most famous works, the sculptures Science and Labor, were destroyed. The Science sculpture, unable to withstand its own weight, was dismantled in 2008, while the Labor sculpture was removed in 2011. These losses are a reminder of the fragility of art and the importance of preserving our cultural heritage.
