Early Life and Education
Ukrainian poet Volodymyr Hyrnyk was born in Khmelnytskyi, Ukraine. His father, Mykola Andriyovych Hyrnyk, was a poet, and his mother, Tamara Dmytrivna, was an ethnographer. In 1973, Hyrnyk graduated from high school in Khmelnytskyi. He then attended the philological faculty of Kamyanets-Podilskyi Pedagogical Institute for one year before transferring to the philological faculty of Kyiv Pedagogical Institute, graduating in 1977. He also completed the Higher Literary Courses in Moscow from 1987 to 1989.
Literary Career
After graduating from university, Hyrnyk worked as a teacher of Ukrainian language and literature in rural schools in the Vinnytsia and Khmelnytskyi regions. He also served as head of the literary and dramatic department of the Khmelnytskyi Puppet Theater. In 1984, he joined the Union of Writers of Ukraine, but later resigned and joined the Association of Ukrainian Writers in 1996.
Hyrnyk has published numerous poetry collections, including "Sproba" (1983), "Letili husy" (1986), "Se ya, prychynnyi" (1994), "Kitanka" (1994), "Vybrane" (1996), "Brater miyi, vovche" (2000), "Po viyni" (2000), "Konik na snigu" (2003), "Smalta" (2006), and "Posvitayetsya" (2008). He has also translated works by Samuil Marshak and David Samoilov into Ukrainian for staging in puppet theater.
Recognition and Awards
Hyrnyk's work has been widely recognized. He has received the Andriy Malyshko, Pavlo Ustenko, and Pavlo Tychyna Literary Prizes. His books of poetry have been nominated for the National Prize of Ukraine named after Taras Shevchenko three times, and he was awarded the prize in 2009 for his collection "Posvitayetsya."
Political Involvement
In addition to his literary career, Hyrnyk has also been active in politics. He was one of three co-chairs of the Khmelnytskyi Oblast organization of the People's Movement of Ukraine from 1990 to 1991. He has also served as chairman of the Khmelnytskyi Oblast branch of the Association of Ukrainian Writers and the Khmelnytskyi Oblast organization of the "Prosvita" Society. In 2006, he ran as a candidate for the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on the list of the Ukrainian National Assembly.
Current Career
Hyrnyk currently resides in Derazhnia, a small town in the Khmelnytskyi region. He continues to write and publish poetry.
