Early Life and Education
Pavol Železay was born on April 15, 1928, in the village of Zohor, Czechoslovakia, to Emil and Magdalena Železay. He was the oldest of four children. During his high school years in Piešťany, Železay was an active member of the Tiger Jazz Band.
After graduating from high school, Železay enrolled in the civil engineering program at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava while simultaneously pursuing clarinet lessons.
Music Career
Slovak Radio and PrúdyIn 1950, Železay recorded his first song for Slovak Radio. From 1967 to 1984, he headed the popular music department at Slovak Radio, where he played a pivotal role in providing a platform for emerging bands and musicians. He produced the first Slovak rock album, "Zvonky zvoňte" by the band Prúdy.
Bratislava Lyre Festival
In 1966, Železay and musician Ján Siváček founded the Bratislava Lyre Festival, inspired by the Sanremo Music Festival. The festival helped launch the careers of many future Slovak pop stars, including Elán, Modus, and Marika Gombitová.
Later Career
After leaving Slovak Radio in 1990, Železay continued his work as a freelancer. He was actively involved in music criticism and was also a founding member of the Slovak Pop Music Hall of Fame.
Awards and Legacy
Order of Ľudovít ŠtúrIn 2011, President Ivan Gašparovič awarded Železay the Order of Ľudovít Štúr, 3rd Class, for his lifelong contribution to Slovak music.
Slovak Pop Music Hall of Fame
In 2011, Železay was inducted into the Slovak Pop Music Hall of Fame.Death
Pavol Železay passed away on July 8, 2024, at the age of 96. He is remembered as a pioneer and legend in Slovak music.
