Pernille Vermund: Danish Architect and Politician

Early Life and Education

Pernille Vermund was born on December 3, 1975, in Copenhagen, Denmark, to parents Per René Espersen and Birgitte Vermund Espersen. She attended high school at Helsingør Gymnasium from 1991 to 1994, majoring in mathematics. In 2001, she graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts' School of Architecture in Copenhagen.

Architectural Career

Vermund worked in various unskilled and student positions from 1989 to 2001. After graduating, she worked as an architect at White Arkitekter from 2001 to 2006. In 2006, she co-founded the architectural firm Vermund Gere Arkitekter MAA with her husband, Johnny Gere, which she led for 14 years until closing it in 2020.

Political Journey

Vermund was a member of the Conservative People's Party. She represented the party in the Helsingør Municipal Council from 2009 to 2011. After a divorce, she temporarily withdrew from politics. She ran as a candidate in the 2015 parliamentary elections.

In October 2015, Vermund co-founded the New Right party with former party colleague Peter Skaarup Christensen. The party advocates for stricter immigration policies, withdrawal from the European Union and certain international agreements, tax cuts, and reduced social benefits.

Election to Parliament

The New Right entered the Danish parliament (Folketing) for the first time in the 2019 elections, winning four out of 179 seats. Vermund became a member of parliament on June 5, 2019.

Controversial Cartoons

In late 2020, the New Right party paid for the publication of cartoons depicting the Islamic prophet Muhammad in the Danish daily newspaper Berlingske and the Danish weekly newspaper Weekendavisen. The funds (67,000 euros) were raised through crowdfunding.

Personal Life

Vermund is married to author Lars Tvede. She has three sons from her previous marriage to Johnny Gere.
