Early Life and Education
Asbjørnsen was born in 1812 in Christiana (now Oslo), Norway to a craftsman. As a student, he met Jørgen Moe, who became his close collaborator in collecting Norwegian folktales.
Folktale Collections
Together with Moe, Asbjørnsen traveled throughout Norway, gathering and documenting народные tales. Their collaboration resulted in the publication of "Norske Folkeeventyr" (Norwegian Folk Tales) in 1841. Several years later, Asbjørnsen independently published "Norske huldreeventyr og folkesagn" (Norwegian Fairy Tales and Folktales) between 1845 and 1847.
Asbjørnsen's approach to collecting tales aimed to preserve their authenticity. He believed in presenting them as close to their original form as possible, without embellishments or additions. This approach helped maintain the beauty and uniqueness of the tales.
Later Career
Beyond his work in folklore, Asbjørnsen also pursued a career in forestry. He served as a forester from 1856 to 1876. Additionally, he published numerous scientific works.
Legacy and Death
Asbjørnsen passed away in Christiana in 1885. His contributions to Norwegian literature and folklore remain significant. He is celebrated for his role in preserving and disseminating the rich tradition of Norwegian folktales.
