Biography of Peter Erasmus Lange-Müller
Peter Erasmus Lange-Müller was a Danish composer who was primarily self-taught and is considered a representative of late Romanticism. His works are known for their distinct national character, with many of his songs (of which he wrote around 250) becoming popular folk tunes. The influence of folk songs and medieval culture can be felt in Lange-Müller's chamber music and choral works.
Some musicologists note that the impressionistic features of Lange-Müller's musical style make him a predecessor to Debussy. While his operas, such as "Spanish Students" (1883) and "Viking Blood" (1900), inspired by Wagnerian models, are considered unsuccessful, his music and songs for the fairy-tale comedy "Once Upon a Time" by Holger Drachmann enjoyed prolonged success.
Lange-Müller's song "We Love Our Country" (1887) on lyrics by Drachmann has been included in the Danish Cultural Canon. In the early 20th century, Lange-Müller retired from his creative activities due to health reasons.
