Peter Lynch - One of the World's Most Famous Mutual Fund Managers

Peter Lynch is one of the world's most famous mutual fund managers. He was born in 1944 and first learned about investing at the age of 11. He studied at Boston College and Wharton, where he earned an MBA degree. In 1969, Lynch was hired by Fidelity as a research analyst, specializing in the metallurgical industry. In 1974, he was promoted to head of research.

Leading Fidelity Magellan Fund

In 1978, Lynch took over as the manager of the Fidelity Magellan Fund, which had assets of $20 million at the time. By 1990, the assets had grown to over $14 billion and now exceed $50 billion. As the manager of the largest fund in the history of the market, Peter Lynch dedicated a lot of time to personal communication with clients and partners. He also preferred to do most of the work himself - scheduling 40-50 meetings a month and making dozens of phone calls daily. Despite this, he only spent 15 minutes a year analyzing the market and the same amount of time analyzing macroeconomic indicators.

Investment Strategy and Success

Lynch avoided working with options and futures and always believed that the key to successful investing was identifying the turning points in a company's destiny. Thanks to Lynch, the market paid attention to growth leaders such as Dunkin' Donuts, Pier 1 Imports, and Taco Bell. According to Lynch, the best results are achieved through slow but steady growth, like the stocks of Chrysler and Stop-n-shop, which increased in value 20 times over 15 years. Another famous quote by Lynch was, "Know what you own and be able to explain it to a 12-year-old in one minute." He preferred to invest in "transparent opportunities" and looked for stocks to invest in close to his home.

Later Career

At the age of 46, Peter Lynch stepped down as the manager of the Fidelity Magellan Fund and became its vice president.
