Peter pursued his undergraduate studies at Acadia University in Wolfville, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He then went on to study law at Dalhousie University in Halifax.

After completing his legal education, MacKay commenced his career as a lawyer with the Halifax branch of the West German firm Thyssen-Henschel. His tenure extended to branch offices in Düsseldorf and Kassel, Germany.

Entry into Politics

MacKay's political aspirations materialized in 1997 when he was elected as a Member of Parliament for the House of Commons.
