Peter Marino: Visionary Architect and Collector
Early Life and EducationPeter Marino was born and raised in New York City, where he attended Francis Lewis High School in Fresh Meadows. His passion for architecture led him to pursue a degree at Cornell University's College of Architecture, Art, and Planning.
Architectural Career
After graduating, Marino honed his skills at renowned architecture firms such as Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, George Nelson, and I.M. Pei. In 1978, he founded his own architecture and design firm, Peter Marino Architect PLLC, based in New York City.
Residential Architecture and Art Patronage
Marino's breakthrough came through collaborations with art collector Jed Johnson and Andy Warhol. His interior design projects for their residences and Warhol's Factory on Broadway 860 garnered attention from the art world and European aristocracy, leading to numerous residential commissions.
Retail Design and Fashion Collaborations
In 1985, Marino ventured into retail design for the Pressman family, owners of Barneys New York. His concept for the female retail experience led to 17 freestanding Barneys department stores across the United States and Japan. This project opened doors to collaborations with renowned fashion designers, including Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Giorgio Armani, and Chanel, among others.
Peter Marino Art Foundation
The Historical BuildingIn 2018, Marino purchased the 1895 R.H. Robertson-designed building in Southampton, Long Island, formerly home to the Rogers Memorial Library and the Parrish Art Museum. He embarked on a three-year restoration project, preserving the historic facade while transforming the interior architecture.
The Exhibition Space
Named the Peter Marino Art Foundation (PMAF), the 8,000-square-foot exhibition space showcases approximately 200 artworks from Marino's extensive collection. The rotating exhibits feature a wide range of works, from Egyptian artifacts to contemporary paintings and sculptures.
Recognition and Support
PMAF has received critical acclaim, including the Designboom's Design Prize 2021 for "Best Exhibition." Marino was also honored with the Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters from the French Ministry of Culture in 2012 for his contribution to French art.
Personal Life and Collections
Marino is married to costume designer Jane Trapnell, with whom he has a daughter. His personal collection includes French porcelain, modern and contemporary paintings, and bronze sculptures from the mid-16th to mid-18th centuries. Marino is known for his distinctive fashion style, characterized by black clothing, leather with buckles and studs, and a leather cap.
