Biography of Kisho Kurokawa

Kisho Kurokawa, a Japanese architect, was born in the city of Nagoya in 1934. He debuted in 1960 at the age of 26, presenting his concept of architectural metabolism, which viewed the city as a living organism and cities as "machines for living" proposed by Le Corbusier. After graduating from Kyoto University in 1957, Kurokawa pursued his studies in the graduate program at the University of Tokyo under Kenzo Tange, completing his studies in 1964.

Founding the Metabolist Movement

In 1960, Kurokawa gained recognition as one of the founders of the Metabolist movement, which opposed the principles of modernist "machinery" in architecture. He advocated for the development of organic tendencies in architecture. Despite the success at the international exhibition in Osaka in 1970, the Metabolist group disbanded. However, Kurokawa continued to further its ideas in his works and theoretical writings.

Establishing "Kisho Kurokawa Architect & Associates"

In 1962, Kurokawa established his own firm, "Kisho Kurokawa Architect & Associates." Currently, his firm has branches in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Astana (where he developed the master plan), Kuala Lumpur, and Beijing.
