Blessed Martyr of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church

Blessed Petro Verhun was a priest and martyr of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. He was ordained a priest on October 30, 1927, by Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky after obtaining a doctoral degree in philosophy in Prague. He was then sent to Berlin for pastoral work among Ukrainian Greek Catholics.

Apostolic Visitator in Germany

In 1940, Father Verhun was appointed Apostolic Visitator in Germany. His responsibilities included overseeing the pastoral care of Ukrainian Greek Catholics in the country. He tirelessly served his flock during the challenging times of World War II.

Arrest and Deportation

In June 1945, after the end of the war, Father Verhun was arrested by the Soviet authorities and deported to Siberia. He was sent to a prison camp in the Krasnoyarsk region, where he endured harsh conditions and persecution.

Death in Siberia

Father Petro Verhun died on August 24, 1957, at the prison camp in the village of Angarsk, Krasnoyarsk Krai. His faith and resilience sustained him throughout his imprisonment and suffering.

Beatification

Father Verhun's unwavering spirit and sacrifice for his faith were recognized by the Catholic Church. On June 27, 2001, he was beatified by Pope John Paul II, making him Blessed Petro Verhun. His beatification is a testament to the enduring power of faith and the legacy of those who stand up for their beliefs.
