Birth and Early Life
Peter Wright, a distinguished scientist and author, was born in England on August 9, 1916, to Maurice Wright, a director at the Marconi Company. Despite his fragile health, Wright excelled in his studies at Bishop's Stortford College.
Early Career and Family Life
Before pursuing economics at the University of Oxford, Wright worked on a farm in Scotland. In 1938, he married Elizabeth Foster-Miller, with whom he had two daughters and a son. With the onset of World War II, Wright held various jobs before joining the Admiralty's Research Laboratory. After the war, he began his research career at the Marconi Company.
MI5 Career
In 1954, Wright joined MI5 as Chief Scientific Officer. He played a pivotal role in decrypting Egyptian ciphers through Operation Engulf and other projects.
Retirement and Controversy
Upon retiring, Wright relocated to Tasmania, Australia. Rumors and controversies surrounding his MI5 work persisted. In later years, Wright suffered from diabetes, heart problems, and Alzheimer's disease, ultimately passing away on April 27, 1995, at the age of 78.
