Early Life and Education
Norwegian artist Peter Nicolai Arbo was a prominent figure in the Düsseldorf School of Painting. In 1851-1852, he studied in Copenhagen before enrolling at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art, where he was mentored by Karl Ferdinand Sohn (1853-1855).
Career in Paris and Norway
Arbo spent the years 1863-1871 living and working in Paris, where he gained wider recognition. Upon his return to Norway, he established himself as a leading artist in his homeland.
Notable Paintings
Among Arbo's most famous works are "The Wild Hunt" (Norwegian: Åsgårdsreien, 1872), based on Scandinavian mythology, which is now housed in the National Gallery in Oslo. Another celebrated painting is "Valkyrie," which exists in two versions.
The Valkyrie (1864)
The first "Valkyrie" was painted in Paris in 1864 (or 1865) and was purchased by Swedish King Karl XV after its debut in Stockholm in 1866. It is currently displayed in the National Museum in Stockholm.
The Valkyrie (1869)
A second version of "Valkyrie" was created in 1869 and is held in the National Gallery in Oslo.
Illustrations and Influence
Arbo also produced numerous illustrations for books on Norwegian history and mythology. His work has had a significant impact on contemporary artists, and his painting "The Wild Hunt" was featured on the cover of the Swedish metal band Bathory's album "Blood Fire Death" in 1988.
