Pyotr Nikiforov: A Forgotten Statesman of the Far East

Premier Minister of the Far Eastern Republic

Pyotr Mikhailovich Nikiforov served as the Premier Minister of the Far Eastern Republic (DVR) from 1920 to 1922. As the first Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the DVR, a "bourgeois republic," Nikiforov not only revitalized the region's economy but also introduced a gold-backed ruble. His influence is believed to have played a role in Lenin's decision to implement the New Economic Policy (NEP).

A Man of the People

Nikiforov originated from a humble background. He believed in transforming society "without bloodshed" through innovative principles. His government seamlessly integrated Bolsheviks, Socialist Revolutionaries, Popular Socialists, and Kadets, as well as prominent Russian industrialists and bankers. Even members of the former Siberian Directory served under him.

Suppressed and Forgotten

After resigning from the premiership, Nikiforov engaged in manual labor as a locksmith, carpenter, and gardener. His remarkable accomplishments as a leader were deliberately suppressed. It was not until 1972, on the occasion of his 90th birthday, that Nikiforov was recognized and awarded the Order of the October Revolution. He passed away in relative obscurity in 1974.
