Petr Plavilshikov

Petr Alekseyevich Plavilshchikov, renowned actor and writer, was born in 1760 into a merchant family in Moscow. He attended the gymnasium at Moscow University and became a student in 1776.
Theatrical Career
Upon graduating, Plavilshchikov, alongside P.I. Strakhov, established a theater at the university, where they staged Sumarokov's "Dmitry Samozvanets" for the first time. In 1779, the year he completed his studies, he joined the Imperial Theaters as a lead actor.
For 32 years, Plavilshchikov served in theaters in St. Petersburg (until 1793) and Moscow (until his death). He also taught Russian literature at the Academy of Arts and the First Cadet Corps, rhetoric at the Mining Corps, and declamation at the Moscow University's boarding school. Additionally, he directed private theaters for wealthy patrons like P.M. Volkonsky and A.N. Durasov.
Literary Pursuits
In his spare time, Plavilshchikov dedicated himself to literature. In 1816, his "Works of Plavilshchikov" was published in St. Petersburg. Elected a member of the newly formed Society of Russian Literature Lovers, he argued for the importance of Russian culture while recognizing the value of Western education. He advocated for the development of an independent Russian art, drawing inspiration from folk music and traditions.
Dramatic Works
As a playwright, Plavilshchikov wrote several notable works, including the tragedies "Rurik," "Ermak, Conqueror of Siberia," and "Takhmas Kulayan." His comedies, such as "Bobyl" and "The Miller and the Mead-Seller as Rivals," were particularly successful. Other dramatic pieces include "Friendship" (tragedy), "The Squire's Offence" (drama), and "Lensa, or Savages in America" (comedy).
Legacy
Plavilshchikov is remembered as a pioneer of authentic Russian drama. His play "Bobyl" remained popular on the Moscow stage into the 1850s. His commitment to Russian culture and his efforts to promote a distinctive national theater left a lasting impact on Russian arts and literature.
