Biography of Petr Pokryshev

Petr Afanasyevich Pokryshev was born in a peasant family and was of Ukrainian nationality. He developed a love for the sky at a young age when he saw an airplane with red stars on its wings. This sparked his dream of becoming a pilot. After completing his education at the Gorky Aeroclub and Odessa School of Military Pilots, Pokryshev became a skilled and accomplished aviator.

During the Great Patriotic War, Pokryshev fought on the Leningrad Front and was regarded as one of the best pilots on the front. He displayed exceptional courage and heroism, commanding a squadron and later a fighter regiment, successfully fulfilling complex combat missions. He participated in numerous aerial battles, personally shooting down 22 enemy planes and 7 more as part of a group.

On February 10, 1943, Pokryshev was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, and on August 24, 1943, he received the second Gold Star medal. He was also decorated with many other orders and medals for his bravery and skill in combat.

After the end of the Great Patriotic War, Pokryshev continued his service in the Soviet Army. In 1954, he graduated from the General Staff Academy and later became a deputy in the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Due to health reasons, he retired in 1961 and worked as the chief of the Leningrad Airport.

Throughout his career, Pokryshev demonstrated exceptional piloting skills and a strong commitment to his country. He fought on the frontlines, defending Leningrad and participating in the breakthrough of the enemy blockade. He was known for his maneuverability and accurate fire, often engaging in close-range combat with enemy aircraft. His leadership and determination inspired his fellow pilots and contributed to the success of their missions.

Petr Pokryshev's bravery and dedication to his country will forever be remembered. His name, along with other Leningrad pilots, will be preserved in the annals of history as symbols of heroism and sacrifice.
