Early Life and Career
Petro Trokhymovych Tronko was born into a peasant family and began his career as a farm laborer. He later completed a teacher training course and taught Ukrainian language and social studies. In 1936, he joined the Komsomol and held various leadership positions.
Military Service and Political Involvement
During World War II, Tronko served in the Red Army as a political commissar. He participated in major battles and was awarded the rank of Major. In 1943, he was appointed First Secretary of the Kyiv Regional and City Committees of the Komsomol and played a significant role in the city's reconstruction after the war.
Post-War Career
After the war, Tronko held various positions in the Ukrainian Communist Party, including Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR. He was a delegate to the 22nd Congress of the CPSU and played a leading role in the preparation for the centenaries of Taras Shevchenko and Hryhoriy Skovoroda.
Academic Achievements
Tronko earned a PhD in History and was elected an Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. He authored numerous works on Ukrainian history and was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in Science for his contribution to historical research.
Cultural Heritage Preservation
Tronko was a passionate advocate for the preservation of Ukrainian cultural heritage. He initiated the establishment of the Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine in Pyrohiv and oversaw the transportation of the Golden Pectoral to Kyiv. He chaired the editorial board of the 26-volume "History of Cities and Villages of the Ukrainian SSR."
Later Life and Honors
In later years, Tronko served as an advisor to President Leonid Kuchma on historical preservation and was a member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. He received numerous awards, including 12 orders and 30 medals, for his contributions to science, culture, and society. Tronko passed away at the age of 100 and is remembered as a prominent Ukrainian historian and cultural figure.
