Biography of Petra Majdic
Petra Majdic is a Slovenian skier, Olympic medalist, and world champion in sprint races. She specializes in sprint races in the classic style with freestyle.
Cup Winner and Career Achievements
Majdic is a two-time winner of the World Cup in the sprint standings for the 2007/08 and 2008/09 seasons. She also finished second in the overall World Cup standings in the 2008/09 season.
Throughout her career from 2006 to 2010, Majdic achieved more than 15 victories in World Cup stages, with only three of them in long-distance races.
Awards and Recognition
Majdic was named the Slovenian Female Athlete of the Year three times (2006, 2007, and 2009).
Olympic Career
Prior to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Majdic had entered the top 10 four times in the Olympic Games in 2002 and 2006, but she had never finished higher than 6th place.
In Vancouver, the individual sprint in the classic style was included in the Olympics for the first time, and Majdic was considered one of the main favorites. However, during warm-up before the qualification round, she veered off the track, fell into a ravine, and injured her ribs.
Despite her injury, the organizers allowed Majdic to start at the end of the qualification round, even though she was supposed to run third out of 54 participants.
Medal Achievement
In the qualification round, Majdic posted the 19th time and advanced to the quarterfinals. She won her quarterfinal race and advanced to the semifinals. In her semifinal, Majdic finished 4th out of 6 skiers but was selected to the final based on her overall time.
In the final, Majdic managed to secure the third-place position, winning the bronze medal after Marit Bjoergen and Justyna Kowalczyk. However, she was exhausted and injured, and a team of medics had to assist her off the skiing stadium.
Majdic's bronze medal was Slovenia's first ever Olympic medal in skiing.
