Phil Murphy: A Political Trailblazer
Early Life and EducationPhil Murphy, the current Governor of New Jersey, was born in Needham, Massachusetts. He earned a bachelor's degree from Harvard University and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Wall Street Career
In 1982, Murphy joined Goldman Sachs as an intern. He was hired as a full-time employee a year later and spent the next 26 years with the company, eventually heading offices in Frankfurt and Hong Kong.
Public Service and Activism
In 2005, Murphy left Goldman Sachs and returned to New Jersey. Former Governor Richard Codey appointed him to lead a commission to address the state's pension crisis. Murphy's recommendations included privatizing state assets, a proposal that was not implemented. However, other measures, such as raising the retirement age and basing pensions on a wider range of salaries, were ultimately adopted.
From 2006 to 2009, Murphy served as treasurer of the Democratic National Committee under Howard Dean and claims to have raised $300 million for the party. He also played an active role in civic organizations, including the NAACP, several charities, and local community groups.
Diplomatic Mission
In 2009, President Obama appointed Murphy as the U.S. Ambassador to Germany. He had previously lived in the country from 1993 to 1997 while working for Goldman Sachs in Frankfurt.
Governorship
After his term as ambassador, Murphy returned to his consulting firm, Murphy Endeavors LLC. In 2017, he ran for Governor of New Jersey and defeated incumbent Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno. He has served in the role since 2018.
Family Life
Murphy has been married to Tammy Snyder since the 1980s. They have four children: Josh, Emma, Charlie, and Sam.
