Phil Scott: A Multifaceted Vermonter
Early Life and EducationPhil Scott is an American auto racer, entrepreneur, and politician who currently serves as the 82nd Governor of Vermont. Born and raised in the state, he graduated from the University of Vermont in 1980.
Business Career
Scott is the co-owner of Dubois Construction, a construction company based in Middlesex, Vermont. He founded the company in 1980 and has since led it to success in the industry.
Political Career
Scott's political journey began in 2000 when he was elected to the Vermont State Senate. He served for four consecutive terms, representing Washington County. In 2010, he was elected as Vermont's Lieutenant Governor. He was re-elected in 2012 and 2014.
In 2016, Scott ran for Governor of Vermont and won the election on November 8th. He defeated Democratic candidate Sue Minter, a former Vermont Secretary of Transportation.
Presidential Election of 2020
Despite his Republican affiliation, Scott voted for Democratic candidate Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election. He stated, "It wasn't an easy one, but I ended up voting for Joe Biden... President Trump had four years to try and unite this country, and he failed."
Auto Racing Career
Scott is also an accomplished auto racer. He began his racing career in 1991 and won the "King of the Road" title in the Late Model division of the Thunder Road International Speedbowl in his hometown of Barre. He won this prestigious title again in 1998 and achieved a remarkable Triple Crown victory in 2002 by winning championships in three different series: Thunder Road, Airborne Park Speedway in Plattsburgh, New York, and the American Canadian Tour.
Over the course of his racing career, Scott has amassed an impressive record of 38 victories on four different tracks. Of these, 29 victories were at Thunder Road, making him the third-winningest driver in the track's history.
