Mike Dunleavy is an American politician who has served as the Governor of Alaska since 2018. A member of the Republican Party, Dunleavy has dedicated his career to serving the state of Alaska.
Early Life and Education
Born and raised outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dunleavy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Misericordia University and a Master of Education from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. In 1983, he relocated to Alaska and embarked on a career in education, working as a teacher and principal in public schools.
Political Career
Dunleavy's political career began in 2009 when he joined the Matanuska-Susitna Valley School District Board. In 2012, he was elected to the Alaska State Senate, representing District D.
Governor of Alaska
In 2018, Dunleavy ran for Governor of Alaska, facing incumbent independent Bill Walker and Democrat Mark Begich. Despite Walker's initially strong support, his campaign faltered, while Dunleavy's gained momentum. On November 6, 2018, Dunleavy was elected Governor.
Campaign and Finance
Dunleavy's successful campaign was guided by political consultant Matt Larkin, who oversaw the campaign's finances. Two major donors contributed significantly to the campaign: Dunleavy's brother, Francis Dunleavy, and attorney Bob Penney. Dunleavy's campaign raised a total of $850,000, while Begich's campaign raised $760,000.
Inauguration and Transition
Dunleavy's inauguration ceremony took place on December 3, 2018, in the small village of Noorvik. Since taking office, he has implemented various policies and initiatives to address the state's challenges and promote its economic development.
