Biography of Philip Caveney
Philip Caveney, a British children's writer, was born in Prestatyn, North Wales, in 1951. Before switching to young readers, Caveney wrote a series of thrilling books for adults. His most famous characters, created by his imagination, include Sebastian Darke, Alec Devlin, Kip McKool, Tom Afflick, and Josh Williams.
The Sebastian Darke Series
Caveney's fantasy series, 'The Sebastian Darke,' tells the adventures of the titular character, a failed jester named Sebastian Darke, and his companions: Max, a talkative and grumpy giant shaggy beast, and Captain Cornelius Drummel, a mighty warrior dwarf who often saves Sebastian from trouble. The first book in the series, 'Sebastian Darke: Prince of Fools,' was published by Random House Children's Books in 2007. It was followed by 'Sebastian Darke: Prince of Pirates' in 2008 and 'Sebastian Darke: Prince of Explorers' in 2009. Caveney also presented a spin-off story about Max's life, titled 'A Buffalope's Tale,' in 2010, and the final installment of the fantasy series, 'Sebastian Darke: Prince of Spies,' in 2012.
The Alec Devlin Series
In August 2008, Caveney released 'Alec Devlin: The Eye of the Serpent,' a classic adventure novel for children aged 9 and above. The story follows the young archaeologist Alec Devlin in 1920s Egypt. It was followed by 'Alec Devlin: Empire of the Skull' in 2009 and the third and final part, 'Maze of Death,' in 2010.
Night On Terror Island
'Night On Terror Island,' published by Red Fox Books in 2011, narrates the story of Kip McKool, a young boy whose father manages 'The Paramount Picture Palace' theater. When a mysterious new mechanic named Mr. Lazarus brings his invention, which can transport people into the world of movies, everything becomes real for those who venture there. The sequel, 'Spy Another Day,' was released in 2012, followed by 'Space Blasters' in May 2013.
The Talent
Caveney's work 'The Talent,' which is available only in electronic format, takes place in the dark future of Manchester, where the struggle for survival is a daily occurrence. The story revolves around young musician Josh Williams, who participates in the nationwide TV competition 'The Talent,' sponsored by the government, hoping to change his life for the better. During auditions, he meets Holly Porter, a girl with an amazing voice, and they team up. However, they soon realize that the competition is far from fair.
Crow Boy
In the book 'Crow Boy,' Philip Caveney tells the story of Tom Afflick, who goes on a school trip to explore the underground street of Mary King's Close in Edinburgh. Tom expects no surprises from the excursion, but as soon as a ghostly figure of a girl appears, he finds himself transported to the past. He ends up in 1645, when Edinburgh was ravaged by the plague. Tom is apprenticed to a cruel plague doctor and wonders if he can survive in this hostile world and find a way back to his own time.
Aside from these series and books, Caveney has also written 'Watchers' and 'Animal Factory' for children, while his adult audience knows him for works like 'Love Bites,' '1999,' 'Bad To The Bone,' 'Burn Down Easy,' and 'Strip Jack Naked,' among others.
